The Benefits Of Buying Vintage

My little personal list of why buying vintage is such a wonderful thing is growing daily.

  • Buying vintage is contributing to the repurposing, recycling, reusing "green" movement. You can feel good about buying vintage!

  • It's fun to imagine where your vintage items have been and what kind of life their previous owner lived.

  • Vintage items are just made better. Once you start to feel the delicate nature of fine china or the sturdy weight of a real wood desk...*sigh*, there's just no going back. New feels cheap in comparison to me now.

  • Buying vintage can bring back so many memories for you. You may start to remember how your grandmother used to use those thick green glasses for your juice when she made you breakfast back when you were five...or maybe you remember the great-aunt who used to cover every surface with crocheted doilies. Suddenly, all those things are so much sweeter and you may realize, like I am, why you're drawn to very specific themes or eras, because they represent little snippets of distant childhood memories.

  • My new addition to add to my list is inspired by today's shopping: the great experience of talking to the elderly as they share their tales of where they got certain items and the joy they exude when they realize their items that they can no longer care for or that belonged to a deceased relative are going to someone who truly loves and appreciates them.

I truly get sappy over this stuff, don't I?!

Old Picture Of the Day

Just a little "shout out" to this blog, Old Picture Of the Day, where I got the old Postman image.

Take a look, there are a lot of neat photos over there.

Wait A Minute, Mr. Postman!

I'm anxiously waiting for the mail today. I should be receiving some of the yummy books and mags I ordered last week.

Here's my list of yumminess:

Also, the current Martha Stewart Living, Easy Quilts and the last two issues of Romantic Homes! Wheeee!

I love to read and I hope to have some great inspiration for my home and items to keep my eye out for while shopping for my boutique...see, all this spending is business-related. :D

If you have a home decor, crafts or quilting book or magazine you would like to recommend, let me know!

A Springtime Greeting Collage Kit

A new favorite on etsy is this gorgeous collage kit from Jenny's Bake Shop

So cute and so spring! I'm in love with
anything that has a bird motif lately, whether it be nests, eggs, birds, whatever...so this is right up my alley. You get a nice piece of Jenny's Bake Shop art and a chance to add your own creativity into the mix.

Love!

I'm Bursting With Ideas For Posts!

I really need to get going to work right now, lol.

I still have many photos to take of the salvaged items I picked up about a week ago. I also want to take photos of various spots in my own home, featuring vintage and repurposed items I fell in love with and how I mix them with my contemporary pieces.

I plan on making a stop at my mom's home and posting some photos of her style. She has definitely been the original influence on my decorating style and she is the expert on mixing the old with the new and managing to keep it all looking current, fresh and comfortable.

Next will be my sister's home. She has recently caught the vintage bug, but she is in love with bright, modern colors...very mod, very retro. Another source of decor eye candy.

All of these ideas are brewing and will be in the works soon!

Vintage Graphics

I've been doing a lot of browsing online today and getting my blog listed on various directories, etc., when I came across Grandma's Graphics, http://www.grandmasgraphics.com/index.php
a website with some wonderful vintage graphics and clipart, totally free!

And speaking of free, I should use this opportunity to give credit to the website http://fromoldbooks.org where I got my absolutely perfect vintage graphic, "Queen Mab", a butterfly queen from a 1920's children's book that I'm using as my banner and avatar for anything to do with "The Vintage Butterfly Boutique."
